Core Values

The United States Marine Corps is built upon three core values: Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These values guide the actions and decisions of every Marine, shaping the culture and identity of the Marine Corps.

Honor: This value represents the integrity, responsibility, and moral character of a Marine. Honor involves upholding the highest ethical standards, both in personal and professional conduct. Marines are expected to demonstrate honesty, responsibility, and respect for others, as well as to remain accountable for their actions. This value is the foundation of trust and cohesion within the Marine Corps.

Courage: Courage is the mental, moral, and physical strength that enables Marines to face fear, adversity, and challenges with determination and resilience.

This core value is not just about physical bravery in combat, but also about moral courage, which means standing up for what is right, even in the face of criticism or opposition. By embracing courage, Marines are better equipped to overcome obstacles and protect the nation and its ideals.

Commitment: Commitment reflects the unwavering dedication and loyalty that Marines have towards their country, Corps, and fellow Marines. This value emphasizes the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance in accomplishing the mission. Marines are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and to continuously strive for self-improvement, both individually and as a unit. Commitment also includes the responsibility to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and to be always faithful to the Marine Corps' traditions and values.

These values are fundamental to the identity and culture of the Marine Corps, and they play a crucial role in shaping the character and professionalism of Marines. By adhering to these principles, Marines can effectively serve their country and maintain the high standards expected of them.

The saying "Once a Marine, always a Marine" epitomizes the enduring impact that serving in the United States Marine Corps has on an individual's life. Enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Reservist in his 20s, Rick Saldan internalized the core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, which have guided him through the past 30 years, shaping his personal and professional achievements.

These values have fueled Rick's determination to complete 26-mile marathons, execute over 180 parachute jumps from 13,000 feet, and travel the country teaching his Motivational Magic inspirational programs to schools and businesses. Overcoming cancer and being ranked 12 out of 80 recruits during boot camp at Parris Island are further testaments to the courage and resilience instilled in him by the Marine Corps.

Embracing the Marine Corps' commitment to self-improvement, Rick rose above his early struggles with writing, eventually authoring 20 books and earning a place on Amazon's bestseller lists multiple times. In recognition of his community service work helping the homeless, terminally ill, and ex-offenders, Rick was nominated for a Gold Congressional Award by Captain Schwalm, Inspector-Instructor, U.S. Marines.

The transformative experience of being a Marine continues to be a driving force in Rick Saldan's life, pushing him to reach new heights in the face of adversity. This is what the saying "Once a Marine, always a Marine" truly means - a lifelong embodiment of the Marine Corps values, shaping the person Rick has become and continues to be.
